About the work

A refined Banko ware vase by Seigetsu Shimizu, demonstrating the quiet elegance and technical sophistication for which modern Banko ceramics are admired. The vessel showcases the beauty of kiln transformation, where subtle variations in firing create rich tonal gradations and unique surface effects that cannot be precisely controlled, making every piece one of a kind.

The vase is elegantly potted with a softly ovoid body rising to a short, gently flared neck. A subtle vertical ridge running along the body lends the otherwise restrained silhouette a sculptural quality, while the balanced proportions evoke a sense of calm and stability. The finely textured surface transitions seamlessly from warm bronze-brown tones near the base to deep charcoal-black around the shoulders and neck, the result of carefully controlled kiln firing. This understated colour variation enhances the form without distracting from its simplicity, exemplifying the Japanese appreciation for natural beauty and restraint.

The vase bears the artist's incised signature on the underside and is accompanied by its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako), original wrapping cloth, and artist's information leaflet.

Born in 1944 in Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture, Suigetsu Shimizu is a celebrated ceramic artist specializing in Banko ware, particularly purple clay teapots. His works have been exhibited at prestigious venues such as the Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition and the Tokai Traditional Craft Exhibition. Honored with numerous accolades, including the Minister of International Trade and Industry Award and the Mie Prefecture Cultural Award, he is widely regarded for elevating the artistry of Banko teaware.
