A Square Jar with Inlaid Patterns and Enamelled Floral Decoration (象嵌赤繪草花文方壷)

Shōwa Era (1926–1989) or Heisei Era (1989–2019)

About the work

A distinctive square jar by Tatsuzo Shimaoka, combining a firm architectural form with bands of inlaid decoration and colourful floral roundels. Its cream, muted blue and pinkish-brown palette brings warmth to the straight-sided body, while the patterned surfaces reflect the artist’s inventive approach to Mashiko pottery.

The tall rectangular body rises to a broad, nearly flat shoulder and a short cylindrical neck. A gently flaring lip softens the transition between the angular vessel and its circular opening. Dark brown lines define the corners and edges, reinforcing the clarity of the construction.

Horizontal bands alternate between fine chevron, diagonal and dotted patterns. Their pale inlaid marks stand out against changing glaze colours, creating a varied rhythm across each face. Cream circular reserves interrupt the bands, carrying freely drawn floral motifs in red, green and yellow. The largest roundel provides a focal point within the repeating decoration.

The interplay of geometric texture and lively brushwork gives the jar visual interest from several angles. Its narrow opening would complement a restrained arrangement, while the decorated faces provide ample presence for independent display. The seller records a small chip at one bottom corner.

Footnote

Tatsuzo Shimaoka, born in Tokyo in 1919, was an acclaimed Japanese potter who became a Living National Treasure in 1996. He was known for his development ofJomon Zogan—an inlay technique combining traditional Japanese rope patterns with slip inlay inspired by Korean pottery. Shimaoka studied under the legendary Shoji Hamada, known as the "Reviver of Mashiko Ware," and later established himself as an independent potter. His work carries forward the folk art ethos, blending old traditions with innovation, making significant contributions to the global appreciation of Mashiko ware.
