Footnote

Shiro Banura was born in Kyoto in 1941, the fourth son of the lacquer artist Seigo Banura. After training at the workshop of Kitataro Kawamura in Kita-Kamakura, Banura established his studio, Otowa Sanbo, in Ayama Town in 1968. He held his first solo exhibition at Nihonbashi Takashimaya in 1972. Banura’s works reflect his commitment to traditional Japanese craftsmanship, fused with a contemporary artistic vision. His career was tragically cut short by his untimely passing in 2001.
